The Council met at d 30 p m The following Bills were read a first time:—Factories Act Amendment, Taieri Land .Drainage Amendment, Rangitaika Drainage, and Hauraki Plains Amendment. The Council decided to insist upon its amendments to the Licensing Bill regarding the wine standard, and Hons. 8011, Jones and Hardy were ap - pointed to confer with + he House upon the matter. The Council agreed with the amend ments made in the Fire Brigades Amendment Bill. LOCAL BODIES’ SUPERANNUATION. Ron. Bell moved the second reading of the National Provident Fund Amendment Bill. This measure provides the machinery for local bodies to establish superannuation funds foi
their employees. Hon. Beehan said the friendly societies in Auckland wished to have nothing to do with tho National Provident Fund. Hon. Moore said that if the National Provident Fund were good L-r the general public it should also be good for the members of friendly societies.
I Hon. Barr disputed the contention that the National Provident Bund had done friendly societies harm. He did not approve of any limit being fixed in salaries for those taking advantage of the fund. Hon. Duthie said ho was glad to hear the views of the friendly societies. Socialistc legslation was robbing the people of their independence. In reply, Hon. 801 l said that, while the limit of a salary of fi 2so «as fixed with regard to the Government fund, there was no limit fixed regarding the salaries under the scheme to he established by a local body. The Counci rose at 3.55 p.m.
