"H.L.H." forwards the followirt inieresting item whch appeared h the East Anglican Daily Times, 17t September, 1902:—Although genera ly regarded as an Irishman, Lor Kitchener has strong claims to th County of Suffolk, in England, fo it was at Aspall Hall in that County where his mother was born, and u which place Lord Kitchener has alway taken a deep, interest. His mother' name was Frances Chevallier, • I daughter of the Rev. John Chevallier M.D. Aspall Hall, a plain, com Portable mansion, embowered il 'voods, has been in the possession « the Chevalliers since 1701' and Is stil held by them. The family wer< French Huguenots, and one of them married Susanna Temple, a direc lineal descendant of the famous Johi Temple, of Stowe,, au,/ncestor of th* Duke of Buckingham. It was Temple Chavallier, born in Jersey in 1675, the son of Clement Chevalliei and Susanna Temple, who purchased the Aspall, property. TEe Rev. John Chevallier was thrice married, and Fanny, Lord Kitchener's mother,- waS a daughter of his third wife. The military hero was born in Ireland at Crotter House, Ballylongford, County Kerry, in June, ISoO. Aspall Hall was the holiday home of the grandchildren, but as Col. Kitchener removed from Ireland to New Zealand while his family were still young, his famous son was well grown; in fact, had attained his present great stature! before he was able to visit his mother's home at Aspall. His cousins told him that he would never be a great soldier, as all the best commanders were little men, but he laughingly replied he would be the exception. As showing his love for the county of Suffolk, it may be mentioned that when he took a title some years ago, it was as Baron Kitchener of Khartoum, and of Aspall in the County of Suffolk.
