The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1914. TRADE AND INDUSTRY.
Person whose thoughts have run to ruin should be able, Wellington PosV says to find .some comfort iri the Labor Department's report of the trade and industrial conditions during September. As the statements are made on the authority of responsible officers, whose .duty is to give the correct situation as far as it can be positively described or intelligently estimated, the words cannot be poohpoohed as part of a plot to allay the alarm of the timid. . Some hands have been put into temporary idle-i ntjss by the war, but the unemployment has fallen far below the gloomy expectations of some folk. Indeed, to-day, after two months of the new state of the world, there are pleasant signs that even people who were at first in a misery of nervousness are regaining their confidence in the'solidity and stability of the British Empire, and their faith in New Zealand's natural resources is being restored. With more rain, the farmers should be rejoicing in a good season. Their anxiety as to a possible shortage of shipping for perishable produce has been further relieved by the Premier, who has declared that he does not fear any difficulty. As the Government's life may depend on the finding of suitable steamers, the people can rest assured that no pains will be spared to obtain the necessary vessels.
