Dr. Kendall, throat, ear and eye specialist, has been sent to Samoa in consequence of an outbreak of eye trouble amongst the New Zealand troops there. —P.A.

The weekly dance of the local Fire Brigade was held last evening, and was splendidly attended. Over thirtycouples -danced well on into the early hours of this morning. Mrs-E. Huncock and Mr L. Jones played extras and Mrs Bianchi supplied the music. The Ladies' Committee supplied the supper.

One of the incidental inconveniences which threatened New Zealand owing to the war was the losb of the papers for the University examinations in November. These were being sent out by the Ruahine, which left the London docks early in August. It may be mentioned that one of the graphic touches of the war correspondence of the Belgian Ministry of War inscribes how the students of the University sat at their examination tables throughout the bombardment of the forts of that gallant post, ai.d then went forth refreshed to join their countrymen in the trenches.

| The Straford Bowling Club opened the green for practice yesterday afternoon, when two full rinks of members indulged in their rollup for the season. The green was in remarkably good order for such an early stage of the-year, and there can be no doubl a great improvement in the sward compared to last season will be found before many weeks have flown. The weather yesterday was dull and threatening, but this interfered neither with the progress nor the enjoyment of the game. The prospects of the Club augur promisingly for a successful season.

At the last meeting of the Council of the Clydesdale .Horse Society in Dunedin, the following gentlemen were elected members of the Society:—J. 3. Barrow, Te Roti, Taranaki; A. L. Bremer, Okaiawa; A. E. Death, "Croftmore," Hawera; Geo. Ford, Momona; W. G. Mcintosh, Springstoii, Canterbury; Ewan McLeniian, Berwick. The following A. and P. Societies were affiliated for the current year:—Egmont A. and P. Association, Hawera; Gore A.- and P. Association, Gore; Palmerston and Waihemo A. and P. Association; Waimate A. and P. Association, Waimate; Southland A. and P. Association, Invercargill; Tokomairiro Farmers' Club, Milton. A letter was received from the Executive Committee of the Panama Pacific Exposition advising that the Society's offer of photographic enlargements oi 1 New Zealand Clydesdales had been accepted and desiring them to be sent on. This matter was left in the'hands of the secretary. to complete. On the motion of Mr Wyllie, the secretary %vas directed to draft a letter of sympathy to Mrs Dahlenburg and family on their recent sad bereavoment.
