GERMAN STEAMER’S RUSE.
Captain J. Minnsen, in command p|, the Norddeutscher Lloyd liner Poifij inern arrived at the Hawaiian Islahds on September 1, after an exciting experience in the Pacific. The' Pommern steamed from Brisbane with less than five torife of coal -in her bunkers, and-passed within a few iftiles of several British war vessels in the course of her voyage to Honolulu. She reached the Hawaiian premier port with all the; coal used, and was compelled to use fuel valued at 10,000. dollars through burning several tons of copra. The Pommern carried about 3500' tons of Australian products, including wool, hides, and copra, and' it is expected that the liner will remain at Honolulu for an indefinite period. Captain Minnsen eluded capture by a hostile fleet of warships by repainting his command to resemble a Swedish freighter. When wireless to give his flag and' registry be declared his steamer the Swedish cargo carrier Venus, proceeding to San Francisco for orders. The reply apparently satisfying the British officers, the German Pemmern was permitted to continue tlie voyagp 'to Honolulu without further interference. The voyage was covered in 18 days.
