Confirmation has been received that the German warships damaged at Kiel (cabled on September 4th) were due to a flotilla engaged in hunting passenger ships in the Baltic, mistaking their own for Russians. A lively battle followed and several cruisers were destroyed or badly mauled. Many were wounded.

TONNAGE LIST OF MERCHANT SHIPPING SEIZED. London, September 17. Fair Play states that the Allies have seized and sunk 352 German merchantmen, of 853,852 gross tons, whereof Britain seized 587,470 tons, and her allies seized 159,401 tons. The Germans had seized 173,941 tons of British shipping, and 3261 tons Russia i. France seized 17,010 tons of Austrian. The British tonnage sunk, including the Oceanic, and many trawlers, is 105,521.
