The Exodus on Friday
THE KAISER AND TROOPS iN FRENCH TERRITORY. ENEMY making determined stand by river aisne (Received 10.0 a.m.) j . Paris, September 15. German newspapers state that the Kaiser entered French territory at Montmedy, expecting his troops to soon enter Paris, and proceeded in that direction along the valleys ot the Aisne and Oise. Other reports say that the Kaiser ventured too far and was hurriedly conveyed to safety by a motor cat to the rear of the Germans.
They seemed determined to hold Amiens until the very last. A force of 10.000 men arrived Inst week and dugtrenches outside. The exodus to the north-east suddenly be- . gan on Friday. The battle had evidently gone against them. Soon afterwards' twenty-four French Cuirassiers galloped into Amiens, the enthusiastic inhabitants unfurling the flag and decorating their houses.
A French airman who flew over the German retreat describes it as a disorderly flight, some marching north ann others north-east, all with tremendous rapidity. Many were running across fields and crawling through hedges without any semblance of order or discipline, many without rifles. communique states: On] our left wing we have everywhere regained touch with the enemy's rearguards, and even the main forces of the eriemy appear to.be making a stand on the front marked bv the river Aisne. In the centre they aiao seem to intend to offer resistance on the heights north-west and north of Rheirns. They continue to retire between the Argonne district and the Meuse. On the .right wing, m the Weevre district, we relieved Tort Troyon, which had been fiercely attacked during the last few days In Lorraine our pursuing detachments, as everywhere else, also maintain contact with the enemy. The morale and health of our armies are excellent*
