A SERVIAN CITY.
Nish, or Nisch. where the Servian Court is located at present, is the Crewe ojf Senia, the chief railway impairing factory being situated in the; town, which stands, not far from the site of the ancient Roman Naissus. Whether in ancient or more modern times, Nish has suffered more than most towns in wartime. It was capJtured and recaptured in the days of the Goths and the Huns. The Bulgarians, the Hungarians, and finally the Servians fell heir to it successively by the fortunes of various wars, and then the Turks got possession of it in 1375, only to he ousted sixty-eight years later by the .Servians and Hungarians in alliance. The Turks s returned in 1450, and though twice ejected subsequently by the Austrians, they retained the town till 1809. when the I Servians made a valiant attempt to gaitt possession. They were beaten back with terrific slaughter, -and **h>,. victorious Turks then raised the hideous memento of a "Tower of Skills" in honor of their victory. The remnants are still visible. In 1878 the Servians had their revenge, and their possession of Nish was confirmed toj i them by the Berlin Congress. j
