There was a good attendance at the iforesters’ Hall last night, when the United Friendly Societies held anither of their weekly dances. The door was in perfect order, and everything went off well. A correspondent from Ngaere points but that in the report of the Ngaere patriotic concert which appeared, in last Friday’s issue no credit is given to the lady members of the committee, to whose efforts the success of the concert was largely due. The pretty, tasteful floral decoration of the hall was the work of the ladies. They provided the flowers and arranged the decoration. Last, but not least, the splendid supper was provided by the ladies.

Yesterday afternoon the official weighing took place of a cake which had been made by Mr W. Elder, and regarding which a guessing competition had been held, the proceeds being for the War Fund. The Mayor was present at the weighing, and Mr D. McCallum was declared the Tvinner with a guess of 221 b 40z., the exact weight. One guess handed in was an ounce short, and many were only an ounce and a half short. A sum of £2 was handed to the Mayor for the War Fund as a result of the competition.

The drawing for the art union for the five oil paintings on view at Mr Moon’s shop will be held in the Fire Brigade Station on Thursday evening, at the weekly dance. The committee has decided to present each person attending the dance with a ticket entitling the holder to a chance in the art union. The admission to the dance will be 2s for gentlemen and Is for ladies, and supper will be provided. Each week the floor at the station shows an improvement, until now it has a highly polished surface, which will be appreciated by the trippers.

Learning that possibly some settlers in the district do not fully'understand how lightly the half per cent, on output which it is proposed to band from the dairy companies to the patriotic fund will press on settlers a representative of the “Post” approached Mr T. H. Penn, secretary of the Dairy Employers’ Union, on the matter, and Mr Penn gave the following apt illustration of what the contribution amounts to: “It amounts,” he said, “to taking three quarters of a pound of cheese from a crate weighing 1601 b and devoting that three-quarters of a pound to ensuring the safe marketing of the remaining b of cheese.” In other words, a settler whose yearly cheque is £4OO, would contribute only £2 ta the patriotic fund.
