Mr Fisher has issued a final appeal to the electors. He says: “1 do not fear even the darkest hour that Fate may have in store for us. Australia will not fail to do its duty to the Empire with courage and resolution worthy of the race. The record of the Labour Party is the best claim of its fitness to govern during this great crisis. I believe that in this dark hour, when the existence of the Empire and the Comonwealth hangs in the balance,a bold constructive policy alone can save Australia from industrial collapse.” Mr Cook’s final appeal denies any intention to reduce wages. He says the next Parliament will largely be a war Parliament. All its energies will be required to prosecute the war successfully, and there will be no time for party wrangling.
