COST OF FOODSTUFFS.

Evidence was given before the Necessary Commodities Commission that the price of some goods was temporarily raised owing to the delay in obtaining shipments. It is anticipated that this will shortly be relieved. Owing to the great advance in wheat it is expected that wheat meals will go higher.
WICKED, BUT NECESSARY.
SCIENTIST ON THE WAR.
(Received 10 a.m.) Sydney, September 5
Sir Oliver Lodge, in an interview, declared that war was an abominable piece of wickedness, but when there is a bullying, dominant Power amongst nations, for the sake of humanity it is necessary to smash it with such vigor that it will not rear its head again. Ho hoped that the attitude of British fairness and humanitarian scruples will he pursued to tho uttermost whatever their foes may do. PROPOSED WAR POLL TAX. BACHELORS AND SPINSTERS. (Received 10 a.rn.) Perth, September 5. At a meeting of citizens to consider means of averting the distress arising out of tho war, the Mayor proposed that a poll tax of £2 be imposed on bachelors, £1 on married men, and 10s on spinsters. A committee is considering tho proposal.
