At Dunedin an inquest was held on William Holt who died at Portobello yesterday. Evidence revealed the fact that he Bad heart disease of long standing, and a verdict of death from heart failure was returned. In the Supreme Court to-day at Wanganui Mr Justice Edwards fined Alexander Gilchrist £25 for the theft of a.stamped receipt. Accused was convicted at last session, but the conviction was subject to appeal, the conviction being upheld. In divorce, Mary Louisa Judge was granted a dissolution of her marriage with George Judge on the ground of adultery.—P.A.

The annual meeting of the Secondary School Assistants’ Association was held to-day in Wellington, Mr F. H. A. Campbell, Otago High School, presiding. The (annual report strongly criticised the Education Bill, which, it stated, was a comparative failure. Several resolutions urging amendments to the clauses dealing with salaries were adopted; also the following motion: “That in view of the serious financial stress that must

necessarily result from the war, this meeting of secondary school assistants is strongly of opinion that any clauses in the Education Bill involving increased expenditure should not become operative until one year after the declaration of peace.”—P.A.
