Mr Florance McCarthy, a veteran New Zealand journalist, sustained * paralytic stroke at Greymonth on Tuesday, and is now in rather a serious condition.

Amongst those presented to Mr Saint George last Friday at New Plymouth. for the preparatory examination on the violin was Lionel A. 0 Warner, of Toko, aged 11 years,a pupil of Miss .Dowling. He passed with honors, securing 85 marks.

Mr J. H. Hempton, Collector of Customs at New Plymouth, who was formerly a great athlete, died this morning as the result of an accident on Saturday night, states the Press Association. Mr Hempton was crossing Powderham Street near Hr. Home’s residence when he collided with Mr D. S. Wylie’s car, which was proceeding town wards. He was knocked down and had three ribs broken, besides sustaining several bruises.
