The British resistance to'■’the Germans has had a moflr" effect upon the whole French line.,./, ifthe Allies’ left has been turned.;the. retreat might readily have been converted into a rout. It was difficult to hold the “Tommies’’ back from pursuing the retiring Germans, hut ' lie commander decided that a forward movement would be highly dangerous. The order for a general withdrawal intensely irritated the British, but they showed coolness and steadiness in the retreat. The Turcos were next the British in the firing line.
