GERMANS EXTRACT FINE IN POLAND.
SIX HOSTAGES SHOT.

■ The Telegraph's Warsaw correspondent states that Germans fined Kalisch (or Kalisz), on the Polish border, £SOOO, shot six of the foremost inhabitants who had been detained as hostages on a trivial accusation, and also bombarded the town. During a German fireworks display the town hall and many buildings were burnt. Kalisz.—Government in Russian Poland, adjoining Prussia, agricultural pursuits and cattle-breeding. The chief town, of the same name, is situated in the valley of the Prosna, and has a population of 22,470.

Sokolva, the treasurer's wife at Kalisz, states that the Germans shot her husband because he destroyed half a million of roubles in paper money. They also shot the police inspector and several officials. The Germans jokingly requested the inhabitants to stand in a row and then shofc them. They bombarded the town with a machine gun, killing several women. The whereabouts of the officials was obtained by a gang of spies, some of whom were dressed as women. GERMANS RETREAT ALL ALONG

The Press Bureau states that the Germans in force attacked the French on the southern frontier on the 25th and were repulsed, and retreated all along the line;
