In the fading light of the evening of July 7Mr f hiiA' Mrs v ßuriiside narrowly escaped death when the motor of the hydro-aeroplane in which they were travelling suddenly stopped, and they hung for a'moment at a height of 3000 feet, above the jagged rocks which form the right bank of the River Hudson near New York. The hydroaeroplane was a big 90 horse-power machine, and when the spectators saw it tilt and waver, as if it were going to collapse and flop backward, they expected to witness a horrible calamity. Happily, Mr Burnside is a man of iron fierve, and just as the nose of the hydro-aeroplane seemed headed straight for the rocks he gave the lever a wrench, righted the flying boat, and thou volplaned at a terrific speo'd to the river below, missing the rocks only by a few yards. The spectators looked to sec it sink out of sight. Instead it sent up a splash of spray, and then bounced on the water like a skipping pebble, until finally it came to a halt, and then began to drift. Motor boats raced to the rescue, and in a few miriiites‘Mr and Mrs Burnside were on their way to their home, travelling now by rail. Mrs' Burnside seemed more elated than scared. “It waS So exciting, I didn’t laave time to get'afraid,” she said, “At a moment'like that'you forget to be frightened. My 'one thought was a sort of vague hope that we would get back bo eaijtli ’ Ivliole; I could 1 see my husband thought we were in a pretty bad pickle, but he brought us down safely, and made a heaaicifhl-- landing. I didn’t get a bit wet. It was the greatest thrill I’ve ever experienced.”
