It i« Stated that the fight began >* in earnest on Sunday erening on both banks of the Sambre from Mauberge to Namur. It is believed the town of Charleroi, which was the centre of action has been taken and retaken.
Charleroi.—A town on the Sambre in the province of Hainout (Belgium) lying twenty miles west, and a little south of Namur. It is 22 miles from Mons. It has a population of about 30,000. Founded in 1666, it is the eentre of the iron industry in Belgium and is connected with Brussels by a canal. During the French occupational Belgium, Charleroi twice successfully resisted the strenuous attacks of William of Orange. In 1794 the 'Charleroi fortifications were dismantled by the French, but the place was re-fortified, under the Duke of Wellington’s direction in 1816. It vwas finally dismantled in 1859. It is ;» station on the Brussels-Namur railway. •
