GENERAL GODLEY ON THE MOVE

General Godley left for Auckland last night to inspect the concentration camp there. To-morrow he will leave for Ihmedin, where he will inspect the concentration camp on Thursday. On Saturday he will inspect the Christchurch camp, returning to Wellington on Sunday. "OFFICIAL" CONFIRMATION. Wellington, August 17. The Premier has 'received the following cable dated London, 9.50 p.m.: It is officially stated that the French and Bavarians had engagements at Blamont, Circy and Arancourt, and were completely successful, and captured the heights at Andela. The French continue to advance on the Vosges. A state of siege has been proclaimed in Bulgaria.

The Hon. Mr Massey has notified the Commonwealth Government that the New Zealand Government will assume the responsibility for payment of charges of goods from German ships to "bo re-consigned to New Zealand. This is only a formal guarantee, as the charges will fall on the merchants and shippers. Palmerston North, May 17. The Manawatu Hunt Club has decided tn go on with the steeplechase meeting on Wednesday next, and devote the proceeds in aid of the Patriotic Fund.
FOR HOME DEFENCE.
NATIONAL RESERVE FORCE. TO BE ENROLLED. The Mayor of Stratford and Captain W. J. Reeve (Reserve of Officers), have received communications from Major Bellringer, officer in charge of the Taranaki Territorials, in the absence of Colonel Malone, in which it is stated that authority has been given by the Defence Department to form a National Reserve for'home defence in New Zealand. Men between the ages of 24 and 50 will be enrolled. The training for a beginning will be musketry and simple marching movements. It will not be possible to equip the force with rifles or uniforms, but arrangements will be made with the Territorial officers for the loan of a limited number of rifles later on to enable members to have some shooting practice. To commence the training will he with staves only, which members should provide for themselves. It is intended that each town should enrol members and elect officers, after which stops will be taken to organise the force on a regimental basis. Major Bellringer suggests that training should commence as soon as sufficient men have been enrolled. Both the Mayor and, Captain Reeve are heartily in accord with the movement, and as the latter has a full supply of enrolment forms, he will be glad to receive applications at once.
