CARNIVAL QUEEN CONTEST
The attendance at the Foresters' Hall last night at the United Friendly Societies' euchre party to further the candidature of Miss Alice Cramer (lied, White and Blue), considerably exceeded the committee's expectations. An enjoyable evening at cards was spent. The ladies' prize was annexed by Mrs Corkins, and the second fell to Mrs Trask; the gents' prize, was won by Mr A. Russ, and Mr J. Jones received the second. Light refreshments was provided. A social is to be held at the Egmont Club this evening in aid of the candidature of Miss Hart (Green and Gold), the Horticultural Society's nominee. Members of the Club and lady friends are invited. In Mr Johnson's barn, Kahouri Bridge, a social and dance will be held this evening in aid of the Country Girl (Miss McCullough). A social and dance in aid of Mrs G. Smith (Royal Blue and White) will be held at Midhirst to-morrow evening. A brake will leave the Post Office at 7.15 p.m. Rugbyites and all sporting cousins will—or at least are expected to—witness the match at Victoria Park to-morrow afternoon, when the reps, from the Eastern Districts Sub-union will show their metal for the first time. Stratford Seniors are well enough known locally, but the unknown qualities of the Out Easters adds just the anticipation to make the game interesting and to show once more the glorious uncertainty of Rugger. But perhaps what will attract those un-Ruggerites will be the fact that they will be helping the candidature of the Sports Girl (Miss Hignett) for whose benefit the match has been arranged. The attendance at the Royal Blue and White dance at the Fire Station was a record, and was eloquent testimony of the increasing |)<on'a.ity of this weekly fixture. Several songs and recitations added to the evening's enjoyment. Dancing was kfpt up till midnight to music supplied by Mrs Bianchi and Mr Kelly. ' A large blue and white candle, weighing seven pounds, in Mr Drake's window has been attracting a good deal of attention. It is to be tbe subject of a- judging competition ai to the length of time it will take to hum. It will be on view for a few days before being lit. The daily lighting and extinguishing has been entrusted to Mr Stan Sharp. Arrangements are being made for "Professor Blooamvhito" to give another exhibition of draughts playing next Saturday afternoon and evening, on the same terms as at his previous exhibition. All winners of games will be presented with half a sovereign.
