£IOO FOR 1000 lb. OF BUTTER.
In order to stimulate an improvement in the breeding, feeding, and testing of dairy cattle, the. New South Wales Minister for Agriculture (Mr W. G. Ashford) has decided to offer a special prize of £IOO to the owner of the first pure-bred cow that produces 10001 b. of butter in twelve months. The conditions attaching the payment of this prize are that the butter calculations are to be made on the chart recently issued by the dairy expert of the department, which is now used for calculating the results under the United Purebred Dairy Cattle-Breeders’ Association, that the prize is not to be given to any cow which does not produce a calf within eighteen months of the date of commencement of the test, and that any cow which slips her calf is to be ineligible. Encouragement such as this, Mr Ashford thinks, should be productive of immense benefit to the dairying industry. There is every reason to hope (states the Sydney Daily Telegraph) that in due course the prize will be claimed by some progressive dairy cattle ■ owner who can furnish this practical evidence of his success both as a breeder and live stock husbandman. In America there are several cows which have exceeded the | standard of 10001 b of butter, and it is hoped that New South Wales will produce animals capable of giving equally high yields.
