SHOOTING.
(By “Right Barrel.) The Clay Bird Championship of Taranaki was held on the Showgrounds yesterday, this being the third time the event has "been shot for since beiiig allotted by the .New Zealand Gun Club Association. Entries showed a considerable falling off on last year’s contest, thirteen only facing the traps yesterday, as against twenty-three in 1913, and, searching for a cause, the superstitions might say: “Shooting on a Friday with thirteen contestants, what else could bo expected The Hawera, Manaia and Waitara Clubs Were not represented at all, though Wanganui sent three, and several prominent El I ham shootists were unable to attend. However, those present )vcre enthusiasts/ and a good day’s sport was enjoyed by all, thohgh the shooting form Was decidedly below last year’s exhibition, a fact rather hard to account for, as the weather conditions were decidedly good. Two sweepstakes were held after the big match, when better form was shown. The winner of the Championship, Mr L. Webby, of Eltham, created a surprise, as until yesterday he had not done any trap shooting for some years, and his return to form was well received by all,"'the win being a Very popular one, “Len’s” good shooting of some six or seven years ago being well remembered. That consistent performer Ered Whittle was again handy, being only beaten by one bird by the winner, the same difference separating him from A. Lineham (third) who has been showing wonderfully improved form of late. The big gun 6, Messrs Wool verm Ashton, and Co., of Wanganui, all unable to get going, in this match, though the former /looked a sure winner at one stage, but meeting with a bad misfire in the fourth round, could only finish a tie for fourth place with Ashton. This trio, however, showed what they can do in the subsequent sweepstakes. Luncheon was provided in the A. and P. Association’s rooms by Mrs Brooking in her usual capable and satisfactory way. Much satisfaction with the new grounds was expressed by shootists, and the action of the A. and P. i Association in letting the Gun Club use its grounds and rooms is much appreciated. Messrs W. J. Hamblyn and Basham kindly acted as markers, thereby lightening the duties of the secretary considerably, and the refereeing was shared by Messrs Marsh and Hunter. Scores are as follows: CHAMPIONSHIP.
THE RECENT EPIDEMICS OF SMALLPOX AND DIPHTHERIA. Would certainly not have attained such proportions if the hygienic .fact were more generally known that the disinfection of the mouth by a reliable and harmless antiseptic is a great protecting factor against all ailments where the infection is through the tliroat or respiratory tract.
