Caillaux's cleverness in creating a diversion and turning a criminal into a political, trial. M. Caillanx in his evidence endeavored to show that the Dresdener Bank were large shareholders in the Figaro, and that hence the paper reflected the German Foreign Office views. A gunsmith gavo evidence that Madame Caillanx tried the revolver at the shootinig gallery before purchasing it, and hit a figure target three times out of six shots. The editor of Le Journal gave evi deuce that Madame Cueydan, formerly Mrs Caillanx, offered him Caillaux's private letters, but he refused them.
