THE MEAT TRUST.
DISCUSSEOM BY FARMERS. |.Per Prkss Association; ] Wellington, July 21. A discussion took place at the Farmers' Union Conference on the operations of the Meat Trust. ft was urged that although the Trust might be prepared to give good prices here, the evil would be that it, would -undersell, at,Home at prices against which the New Zealand companies could not compete. Another delegate said he had been informed by one of the prinicpai men in the meat trade in New Zealand that in five years, the American Trust would control the output of.meat in this coimtry. ' ,Dr. Reakes, of the Agricultural Department, informed the Coriferenco that he had acquired a great deal of information regarding the operations of the Trust, but much of it was strictly confidential. It seemed to him that iti would be very foolish to make a bogey of the Trust, but at the same time it would be very foolish to ignore its prejudicial effect on the New Zealand trade that-might result from'the operations of any big trust. The Conference decided to urge the Government to carefully watch the operations of the Meat and other Trusts.
