In connection with the Eveleigh hold-up charges, a woman named Kelly, who was arrested with Ryan in Melbourne, gave evidence that about the time of the robbery she was frequently in the company of Ryan amL Freeman in Sydney. Ryan had plenty of money and presented her with several considerable sums, jewellery, and other valuable articles, and they had champagne suppers. Ryan then departed for Melbourne, and she subsequently joined him. He told her he intended t° stay a short time and then go to America, adding that she need never want as ho had money to burn. In Melbourne Ryan met Falkiner and other men, and handed over to one of them a bundle of notes. Another bundle was put in a jar behind the fireplace, where she and Ryan were staying, the police afterwards discovering them. When the police came to arrest Ryan he jumped out of bed and seized an automatic pistol. She advised him not to shoot as it would only make things worse, and he did not attempt to shoot. On the way to Sydney while under arrest Ryan told her to tell the truth.

Amongst the letters found in the house where Ryan was arrested, and which were identified as being in his handwriting, one was to a man named Brown, stating that he had received a call from another quarter which looked like a cake-walk for a nice little roll running into four figures. Another letter was to Falkiner, stating that' he was sending a parcel of goods, and asking him to keep it iptact until he arrived, adding: “You can guess what the contents will he!
