THE AMERICA CUP.

[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association. 1 New York, July 12. The Resolute defeated the Vanitie by three miles, and the Penance by 3J miles, in a thirty miles contest, in typical Sandy Hook weather. ' The Vanitie defeated the Defiance by a small margin, the Resolute being completely outclassed, in the eliminating test. There was a heavy fog. Three yachts have been built as a Cup-defence class, from which one will be chosen, after extended tests, to defend the Cupj While Sir Thomas Lipton's challenger. Shamrock IV., has only recently been launched, all three American boats are in the water. The last of the Defence class to take the water was the Vanitie. She is built of manganese bronze, and is a big-bodied boat', with full, hard bilges, long and finely-drawn-out ends, and liberal freeboard—a handsomely turned boat above water, but with more curved lines in her underbody than the'theorist who advocates straight lines for speed would care to see. In rig, as in construction, Vanitie is very light. She has a steel mast, 108 ft. long. The sail plan of Vanitie is longer on the base, in proportion to its height, than that of either of her rivals. In the absence of official figures, the dimensions of the three yachts may he given only approximately. They appear to be as follows:

<D P r ~' r* bC Cl £ P O V P *£ ? ?3 * t> a- o -r r^ Cm p: P Pi * Resolute 107rt7in 75ft 21ft (iiu 13.75 ft 'Defiance 115 ft 80ft 22ft Gin 18.75 ft Vanitie 119 ft 75ft 22ft lin 13.75 ft

The displacement of each yacht is about TOG tons. The sailspread of Resolute is said to be about 7800 square feet, and that of the other two abou! 9000 square feet each. Each yacht has a centreboard of bronze, by which her draught may be increased to 22ft.
