Sydney, July 12. The inter-State hockey tournament has opened. South Australia defeated Victoria by seven goals to nil. The recently-arrived English ladies' team, though not competing, met and defeated New South Wales by eleven to three. The visitors displayed fine combination and skill. BOXING. London, July 11. Rice defeated Dan Goldrich, champion of Scotland, on points, in a full fifteen rounds. LAWN TENNIS. London, July 12. Mavrogordato defeated G-ermot 4_6, 7—5, 9—7, 6—2; Parke defeated Decugis, 6—2, 4—6, 3—6, 6—3, 6—3. Berlin, July 12. Further consultations with the Lawn Tennis Association failed to secure a team to go to America to contest the Davis Cup.
