Next to Murder.
ALLEGED TRAIN-WRECKING HEAVY BAIL FIXED. [By Electric Telegraph —Copyright] [United Press Association.] Palmerston N., July 13. A sensational sequel to the recent rumors of attempts to wreck the Main Trunk train by placing a beam across the rails at Awapuni, was enacted in the Court this morning, when a young man named Jobn Mason was charged that on July 8, at Awapuni, he did wilfully place an obstruction on the railway line between Palmerston and Longburn. Detective Qiiirke and Sweeney made the arrest on Saturday. A remand was granted till Tuesday, 21st inst. ■ Accused's counsel, Mr tnnes, asked for bail, which was opposed by Sub-Inspector Marsack, who said: "It is a very serious offence. Accused does not appear to be 'compos mentis,' and with men in this condition there is no security that they might not repeat the offence." Mr Poynton, S.M.: "The offence is next to murder; 100 people might have been killed." Bail was fixed at £IOOO and two sureties of £SOO.
