Man or youth is wanted to make himself generally, useful. The local auctioneers' offices will be closed all day Thursday, on account of tho Hawera Show. Mr T. Lyford reports the'appearance of some early lambs on his East Eoad farm. Lambing commenced on the 18th inst. An elderly man named Thomas Hefferman was found dead on the railway line at Ellerslie states a Press Association message from Auckland. The body was much mutilated. It is supposed that the man had fallen through the sleepers on the bridge while crossing the line. An Auckland Press Association telegram says that William Donaldson,, railway porter at Whangamarino, was before the police court' this morning on a charge of manslaughter arising out. of the raihvay disaster on May 27. The case is proceeding. A,.conference of senior Territorial officers opened this morning in Wellington to consider tho Defence scheme and make recommendations for its improvement. Fifty-fire officers are attending (states the Press Association) with Major-General Godley, K.C.M.G., in the chair. The conference was formally opened by the Governor (Lord Liverpool), and will last for two days. Next week a conference of headquarters and district staffs will also be held with the same object in view. '. Hitherto a conference of the two branches of the. service was held together, but on this occasion it had been that it would be better they should sit separately, so that they can he free to make their own recommendations.
A Dunedin Press Association telegram this afternoon states: Though diligent search has been maintained in the district, no trace of the Eev. Woodhoijse- has been found. The opinion is that in walking from Stirling to Balciutha, he took the shorter route oval- the railway bridge and slipped and fell into the Molyneaux rirer. <Th© Rev. Mr Woodhouse is a very well-known clergyman in Dunedin. He came but from the Old Country about twelve years ago. He went as a curate to St. : Peter's, Caversham, and from there was appointed to a country* dire, - He was subsequently appointed to St. Mary's, Mornington. He is very highly respected, and held in the most affectionate esteem by his congregation and brother clergymen. Mr. literary editor of the T>tago Ihocesan Church paper, the ''Church Envoy.")
