H.R.H. Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and Rothesay, Earl of Chester, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Great Steward of Scotland,. Duke of Saxony, and Prince of Saxe£oburg and Gotha, was horn at White. Lodge, Richmond, on June 23, 1894.. The summary of the Prince's career so far is as follows:—He was under the tutorship of Mr Hausell until he entered Osborne on May 1, 1907. Went to Dartmouth in 1909;

was .midshipman on the Hindustan. „ Invested as Prince of Wales at Carnarvon Castle in 1911, and was created Khigh\of the Order of the Garter in June. of. the same year. Studied; French and political economy in Paris during 1912, and entered'as an under.v graduate at Oxford University, Visited Germany during 1913. To-day the Prince .celebrates his twentieth birthday. ; iMany happy returns!

Mr R. H. Campbell, late licensee of the Empire Hotel, Stratford, was taken from the private hospital, in which he has been an inmate for some time past, to New Plymouth on Saturday last. ■ Mr Campbell's friends will regret to hear that his condition shows little signs of improvement.

Mr Alfred Vanderbilt started his annual London-to-Brighton coaching season on May 2nd. This is Mr Vanderbilt's pet hobby, and he does it not for profit, but for amusement and recreation. Some ten teams are used to cover the 60 miles, and the stabling expenses alone for the season amount to at least £1,500. Altogether, the cost of the Venderbilfc coaches for a seven weeks'" season is about £3,000, while the receipts, at 15s per passenger, are not more than £SOO.

Madame Melba, who is -expected in Australia next month, will give several concerts in Western Australia en route to Victoria. The diva returns to Australia in order to remain for, some months with her aged father, who a few; days after the recent celebration of his 86th birthday, underwent a serious operation. The state of his health has given much anxiety to his family,

and thus Madame Melba thought it desirable to cancel her tour of England, * fixed for October, November and December of this year, putting forward her next season-there to February, March and April of next year.

Mr W. J. .Crawshaw, manager of ' the Bank of New Zealand in Stratford, last evening received a very kindly letter from Mr B. Hector, Registrar of the University of New Zealand, in which he expressed his extreme s6rrow to hear of the death oi Mr Crawshaw's son Cedrio just after his return from his final law examination in Wellington, Mr Hector adds that he hopes •it will be some consolation to Mr Crawshaw to know that the examiners have awarded him a pass. It appears that out of 81 candidates who sat for the special final law examination held last month only nineteen passed, the late Mr Cedric Crawshaw being one ■of those. He passed his final Civil Service examination while a pupil of Mr P. Tyrer's at the Stratford school, and subsequently matriculated and : passed his solicitors' general knowledge examination while a student of Wanganui College, passing his final in law as above stated in his twenty-first fyear.;' '..'■'<■ ■ ■• ■
