Members of Lodge Stratford have decided to hold a grand Masonic ball in the Town Hall on Thursday, 16th July. Strong committees have been appointed to make arrangements, and these will meet on Tuesday evening to report, A ladies committee has also been set up. Mr E. Jackson will attend to /the secretarial part of the function, A case under the new Land Agents’ Act came before Mr Yv. G. Riddell, S.M., at the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The defendant was prosecuted under section 1-P for carrying on the business of a land agent without first obtaining a license. The Chief Detective said that there was, no suggestion of any irregularity, Llie defendant had sold the interests of two hotels, and had thereby brought himself under the .Act. The facts were admitted, and it was stated that the defendant had since registered. His Worship pointed out that ho could impose a fine of £SO, but he thought this was the first case of its kind in New Zealand. Under the circumstances he would make the fine £l.
On, December 15, 1913. while the steamer Tongariro w«s unloading cargo at the Nelson wharf a laborer named John Thomas Out fell through an open section oi the hatchway, and died as the result of injuries received. At the Supreme Court this week the Public Trustee, as administrator of the deceased’s estate, clc.imed £IOOO damages from th« New Zealand Shipping Company for alleged negligence in not having the opening, through which the deceased foil, properly guarded, and in not having the hold properly lighted; The case, which was heard before Mr Justice Hosking and a jury of twelve, lasted two days. After a retirement of four and a-qnarter hours, the jury this evening returned a verdict for the plaintiff for £BOO d a mages, scale costs Itfdng allowed.
