The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 1914. EUROPEAN CENSUS RETURNS.
The actuary of a British assurance society recently, in the course of an address, gave some interesting facts regarding the latest census returns of Britain, France and Germany, especially referring to the different “effective” ages of the three countries, fhc comparisons given show that the population of Germany inciudos a greater proportion of young people than does that of Britain, while Britain shows up more favorably in this way than France. For instance, where one half the total German population is below the age of 23.5 years, the corresponding figure for Groat Britain is 25.75, and for Franco it is 50. Halt the German population is between the ages of 10.75 and 40.75, while half the British ts between 12 and 12, and half the French between 14.25 and 48.25. No less than three-quarters of the population of Germany are under 40.75 years old: in Britain under 42: while in France the age is as high as IS. In each if the three countries named the number of older women is greater than that- of men, the comparative) figures showing that in Germany thro*-
quarters of the female population arc below the age of 41.75, in Britain 42.5, while in France the age rises to 49. The difference in the birth-rate in. the three countries under consideration is undoubtedly one cause of the fact that there are proportionately a far larger number of older people in France than there are in Britain,
