Mr R. H. Campbell is still in hospital, and Ms condition is causing his friends serious anjriety, although it is satisfying to learn, he is not more particularly low to-day. lie death of Captain Thomas Fernandez, a well-known coastal pilot, who came to New Z.ealand sixty years ago, is reported from Gisb'orne. He was trading on the coast, and subsequently, during the Maori war, commanded the gunship Pioneer. 1 The many friehds of Mrs L. Olliver, of the Empire Hotel, Stratford, will be sorry to hear of the death of her father, Mr J. Pritchard, late licensee of the Bellevue Hotel, Hokitika, His demise was very unexpected. He suffered; an apoplectic stroke on Friday and died on Saturday morning. Deceased: was 68 years of age. The : death occurred yesterday morning of George Henry Davies, "of Karori, aged ?0. He was a son of Dr. Davies, who was associated with the early missionaries at the Bay of Islands 1 and Opotiki. He was born at the Bay of Islands, and was'educated there and at.the Church of England Grammar School, Auckland. From 1872 to 1906 he was in the Government Service as interpreter and translator in the Native Department. He was a member of the "Polynesian 'Society,"' and" ! ' for" many years a leading chess player, besides being a keen horticulturist. — Wellington telegram.
