At Midhirst a euchre party and dance is fixed for Wednesday at 8 o’clock.
A man named William Clarke, aged about fifty, committed suicide at a New Plymouth hotel this morning, cutting his throat. He had a knife rack as a side show at the Winter Show, and was to have left for the Palmerston Show this morning. No cause is assigned.—P.A.
A Dunedin Press Association telegram to-day state's: The Union Company has received advice that as the result of the watersiders refusing to work overtime in Australia, the Australian coastal cargo rate has been increased Is 6d per ton, and the passenger fares have been raised ten per cent. This will not affect the cargo rates and fares between New Zealand and Australia, but cargo and passengers transhipped from or to Australian steamers will be subject to the increased charges. % So far as the transport on the Australian coast is concerned, the increases are now in operation. 1 •> -vr IMS
