Essex scored 264 (Douglas ; 74), and declared their second inning closed at 277 for three wickfets (Gillingham 121 not out). Surrey made 132 and 86. Douglas took six wickets for 60, and five for 38. Tremlin took four for 68 and four for 47-. They bowled without change throughout.
