One hundred and ninety Euzones, with officers, have decided to assist their co-religionists at Epirus. Leaving their rifles in barracks to allay suspicion, they embarked on a steamer as ordinary passengers. When at sea they overawed the crew and ordered the captain to proceed direct to Prevesa. The authorities, when apprised of the desertions, sent two destroyers in chase. They came abreast of the steamer and ordered her to follow them. The Euzones refused. The destroyer thereupon lay across the bows of the , steamer. The Euzones took the wheel and crashed into the destroyer amidships, then beached their vessel. The deserters disembarked and started to march across country, but finally were persuaded to surrender, and were immured in an adjacent fortress.
