There were several narrow escapes of inmates during the destruction by fire of a six-roomed residence at Miratttar (Wellington) last evening. The house was owned by W< Tait and occupied by F. Turnbull. The -outbreak was due to the falling of an oil lamp. Two firemen, J. Mann and J. Harris, were injured through a chimney falling, the former severely.
Edward Dutler. ox-bookmaker, was charged at the Christchureh Court with betting at the New Brighton trots, and pleaded not guilty. His story was that the money handed to him was for a ticket on the tote. The Magistrate, in dismissing the case.

A Press, Association telegram from Dunediii to-day states: A deputation Union waited on Mr Massey this morning. One speaker said the people got into the Department who should not he there. General laborers had never been represented on the staff.. There should he a practical man there from their ranks. Another speaker said it was "up to" the general laborers to have a representative in the Labour bureau. The* secretary of the union alleged that'breaches of the laborers' award had been committed and no action taken." Mr Massey said he would look into the-Twrnplaiiits regarding 1 ' the administration, and would do his best to remedy them.
