Terribly Burned.
BY BENZINE EXPLOSION. ACCIDENT AT HURIMOANA. A terrible accident happened at Hurimoana yesterday afternoon, the victim being Miss Dorothy Shewry, daughter of Mr R. E. Shewry. At about two o'clock. Miss Shewry was tidying up the wash-house, and in doing so lifted a tin of benzine to shift it into a new position. As she passed the fire, about six feet away, a terrible explosion occurred. The place at once burst into flames, and Miss Shewry was- very soon a mass of fire. Her screams attracted neighbors, who at on.ee did what was possible for her. Valuable assistance was rendered by the Public Works Department and the Railway Department, and a special train was run in to Stratford to convey the sufferer to the hospital, where the unfortunate victim arrived after nine o'clock. Miss Shewry is .severely burnt all over the body—though her face was not touched— and her condition is critical. It is presumed that there was a leak in the benzine tin and that some gas fumes escaped and were ignited by the fire.
