Forty-seven passengers. firemen, Laid policemen narrowly escaped death. Dense smoke overwhelmed a score of immigrants locked in a basement. IThe firemen and police entered, and lin a trying rescue dragged them into [the open air. i It is expected that all will recover. Valuable railway records were burned. MILES OF FOREST FIRES. (Received 12.30 p.m.) Ottawa, May 28. News from St. John, New Brunswick, states that miles of forest ures are threatening the villages along the Canadian-Pacific railway, and sweeping the country bare for ten miles wide. Farmers' homes were destroyed, and there were narrow escapes, but no loss of life is reported.
