The underwriters receive eight per cent, of the New South Wales loan, says a London cablegram.

A Greymouth P.A. message states that an old man named Dawes Lenon has been missing from his hut at Barry town since Saturday.

While many parts of the Dominion were experiencing bad weather, the West Coast was favored with ideal days, states a Greymouth Press Association telegram. The average rain fall in Greymouth for tin? months past so far this year, is 6.7 in, or §in less than the average of 1913.

The- chairman (Mr W. Hathaway) and Cr. Christoffel are to represent the Stratford County Council at the turning of the first sod of the Opunake railway at Opunake on Thursday next. At the same time they will interview the Premier and the' Minister for Public Works on various matters on which the Council has approached the Government. Special stress will be laid on the heavy rates paid in the County, and the necessity either for an increased Government subsidy, a tax on motor cars, or the erection of tollgates. • •

A special meeting of .the Stratford County Council was*hold this morning, •when there were present Crs W. Hathaway (chairman), W. H, Were, E. Walter, J. Young, W. Rogers, J. Smith, E. AndCrson, J. Ghristotfel, and J. Thomson.—lt was decided to request the Enigneer to report to next meeting on the question of surfacemen’s and foremen’s wages.—The question of supervision of work .was fully discussed, and it was decided to call for alternative applications—an overseer at £250. per annum and an engineer at £3so.—The afternoon was devoted to fixing the duties of these officers and drawing up the schedule of charges for the proposed toll-gates.

With reference to a local appearing in our issue of Thursday . last, with regard to the pendiug.,Supreme Court action, 11. H. Carqorqn v. J,; we are requested hyhthe'-spHciters': to the parties to point out that-until accounts are taken as arranged,, no specific sum is claimed to be due by either side. Althou’gh the sUm' of £320 has been claimed by the. plaintiff, the defendant has, a substantial counter-claim and the investigation will cover a much larger field than that dealt with in the proceedings now before the Court. Therefore, in fairness to. the defendant we point out that amounts claimed in the adjourned action are no criterion of what the final result of the : accounting will he.
