Over the Bridge.
and the loan proposals. THE POSITION TO DATE. The following self-explanatory letters are published for general infer mation:— May 23rd. 1914. The Editor, “Stratford Evening Post.” Sir, —For the information of, ratepayers I would ask you to kindly publish the enclosed correspondence. Thanking you in anticipation, I am, etc. W. P. Kirkwood, Mayor. loth May ,1914. AY. P. Kirkwood, Esq., Mayor. Pear Sir, —I have the honor to append to this, a copy of two resolutions passed last evening at a public meeting of ratepayers south of the bridge, and beg you to give them your favorable consideration. —I am, sir, yours obediently, H. "Wilson, chairman of meeting.
Resolution, 1: “That His Worship the Mayor be respectfully requested to call a public meeting at an early date to consider loan matters.” Resolution 2:—“That His "Worship the Mayor be requested to place a sum on his loan proposals,, sufficient to pay for the construction of a new bridge over the river the full width of Broadway.” 18th May, 1914.' H. Wilson, Esq. Dear Sir,—! have to acknowledge, receipt of your letter dated 15th inst. relating to resolutions carried at a public meeting of ratepayers south of the bridges. Before considering calling a public meeting of ratepayers, I would ask you to kindly advise me what loan matters you propose to place before a public meeting of ratepayers, for consideration. In the matter of the request that I should, in any loan proposals that I may bring forward, place a sufficient sum to "cover the cost of a new bridge over the river the full width of Broadway, I desire to state that I am not prepared to do as suggested.— Yours sincerely, AY. P. Kirkwood.
19th May, 1914. W. P. Kirkwood, Esq. Dear Sir,—ln reply to your letter of yesterday, I regret the motion was not definite. What the proposer and seconder had in their minds was, I believe, the reconsideration by a public meeting of the proposals of last year including of course both the loan for the bridge and the £3OOO for the improvement of Broadway.—l am, sir, yours obediently, H. Wilson. 22nd May, 1914. H. Wilson, Esq, Dear Sir, —Yours of 19th inst. duly received. I have now to inform you that it is my intention, quite apart from the request of the meeting for which you acted as chairman, to call a public meeting of ratepayers within the borough, such meeting to be for the purpose of considering loan proposals; the . date of the meeting will be advertised in due course. Being strongly of opinion that it would be in the best interests of not only the southern ratepayers, but also the ratepayers as a whole, I would suggest that the resolution carried, pledging the meeting of southern ratepayers', to vote solidly against any loan proposals that did not cover the bridge widening proposal, should be rescinded. By so doing the question of loans would be left an entirely open one for the meeting of ratepayers to deal with.—Yours sincerely, W. P. Kirkwood.
