The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1914. POLAR EXPLORATION.

Though the general public hardly knows anything about the matter, or in fact even realises that such a movement is contemplated, scientific

circles are, it is stated, keenly i* terjested in the Anglo-Swedish expedition now being organised for Antarctic, exploration. It is stated that the Trustees of the British Museum are prepared to subscribe to the enterprise £SOO a year for five years, and that the .Royal Society has intimated its willingness to grant £SOO towards the first year's expenses. The Swedish Geographical Society, which has been working out the plans for the 'expedition, is desirous of raising in England promises to the amount of £1,500 a year for five years. This, it is estimated, will cover half the cost of the expedition's maintenance during the time it is at work in the Antarctic regions. The other half Js expected to be voted by the Swedisli I'arliament, and the cost of equipping expedition, as distinct from the cost of maintenance, has been guaranteed in Sweden. The total estimated cost of the expedition is only about £20,000. which, seems a very modest amount for an expedition which is intended to include in its scientific staff a dozen members, and to maintain a base camp in the Antarctic regions for five years. The smallness of the

,estimate is due to the fact that, japart from the small motor-driven I vessel which will be employed to take : the expedition South in the latter part of L 915, the explorers will rely on whaling vessels to relieve members of the party who may lied it ; necessary to return home, to bring other* to take their place, and to 'renew tlit •xpwlition'i stock of uaeesHams,
