STRATHMORE NOTES.
.Much could be saiil in praise of tho district dances (writes a correspondent), but those in a position to judge are or the opinion that in the past few have equalled and none certainly excelled the one given on Friday night last by a few of the leading Makahu settlers. Under ordinary circumstances, the weather would have marred the success of the function, but the capabilities of our Brewer Road friends are well known, and their hospitality is a by word; therefore very few guests were absent when proceedings opened. About forty couples were present, some coining from as fatas New Plymouth, while Stratford was also well represented, and dancing went on merrily till about 4.30 i.ni. The floor was in good order, and the supper went to prove that cooking is by no means a lost art out in Makahu. Special credit is clue to Mesdames Brewer, Rintoul and Pratt, w ho left no stone unturned to provide an enjoyable time, and they are to be congratulated on their success. Messrs A. Walker and Pratt proved themelves capable M.C.'s., while Mr Pearen's music added largely to the suc- ; ess of the evening. Tiie dresses were both pretty and varied, and were all worthy of mention, but space forbids. Here are a few who caught the writer's eye:—Mrs Brewer, dainty white
taffeta silk with an ninon overdess; Mrs Pratt, black velvet dress; Mrs Itentoul, saxe blue crepe dress; Mrs Meredith looked well in a pretty grey ('ress; Miss'Mercdith, red velvet; Miss Whishaw, red silk; Mrs Collinson, white dress trimmed with tangerine; Miss Tiplady, black dress:
