£ The second victim of Sunday's fire in Wellington was George White, aged 38, a flaxmill hand, formerly of Bradford, England. I ' ■ The Rev. 0. W. Howard, late of Waimate north, Bay of Islands, the new vicar of Holy Trinity Church, arrived in Stratford yesterday. He is to be instituted on Sunday next. Mr F. W. Shortland, a well-known member of the legal profession, has, the Wellington Post understands, decided to contest the Taumarunui seat at the apporaching election. Mr Shortland is the author of a number of works on law, and is described as an "out and out Reformer." The sitting member is Mr C. K. Wilson, also a Government supporter. Mr Charles E. Archibald, chief clerk in the Taranaki Land Board office, has received instructions to take up a similar position under the Otago Land Board. Mr Archibald, who was born and educated in Wellington, was until his departure for Auckland a few years ago, captain of the Petone Naval Artillery. In Auckland, from which city he was transferred to New Plymouth, he also took an active part in the defence movement.
Mr T. A. W. Nicholson, of StratforiLj returned last night, after a visit to Palmerston North, made at very short notice owing to a serious accident which befel his brother, Mr Charles Nicholson, of Woodville, on Saturday last. It appears that the latter v who was just recovering from a previous accident which had left him lame, attempted to board an outgoing train at Palmerston North after it had started, and missing his footing (so far as can be ascertained) fell under a carriage. Several passengers saw the fall and a lady's scream attracted Guard Muirhead's attention, and with great presence of mind he at once applied the Westinghouse brakes and brought the train to a standstill. This promptitude undoubtedly saved Mr Nicholson's life, though, as it is, he sustained severe injuries to his face,, head and foot, some hones being broken. He is, however, now doing very well in the Palmerston Hospital, though.it will be some time before he is able to get about! Mr Charles Nicholton wjll be known to many of our readers as a prominent bowler.
