THE NORTHERN TERRITORY.
The Administrator of the Northern Territory of Australia, Dr. Gilruth. while in Melbourne recently expressed the view that the development ol a purely tropical country entirely hj whites, without the aid of any indigenous colored labor; was the greatest experiment of tlie kind that had ever be«n tried. Consequently it presented many entirely unusual aspects. The few settlers who were on the Daly River, chiefly men with families, were perfectly satisfied that they could make a good living, provided a dairy factory was established in theii midst. They had every hope of this being accomplished. The advent oi railway construction, which he hoped to see started in the 'near future, would prove very useful, inasmuch as many of those engaged in the work were, likely to become permanent settlers. It is his endeavor to assist in every reasonable way, as many oi those laborers as are desirous of becoming permanent settlors. His experience has been that the • cop::;; y is a very healthy one. During lasi summer his two children, who were at school in the south, spent their vacation of two months at Darwin during the warmest period of the year, and Dr. Gilruth has had no reason to regret the experiment.
