BERNARD’S PICTURES. To-night’s new series of pictures to be screened at Bernard’s Theatre will include a star feature, Chas. Dickens’ famous work, “Scrooge,” adopted from “A Xmas Cprol,” the title role, which electrified London, will be played by Seymour Hicks. Charles Dickens has immortalised Ebenezer Scrooge in his wonderful story, “A Christmas Carol,” and Seymour Hicks, the eminent English actor, set the whole of London talking by his marvellous characterisation of Scrooge. The story is so well known that it need only be outlined in order to awaken the memory. It is Christmas Eve, a good old-fash-ioned Christmas Eve in England, with the frost in the air and the snow lying thick and white on the ground. Scrooge, the miser, who has buried any kindly feelings he ever possessed instead of cherishing the peace and good will to all, goes about causing as many heartaches as his flinty nature gives occasion. When midnight comes, Scrooge has tallied up his bank book and falls asleep. Presently the ghost of Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s ’ former partner, wakens the miser and portrays the ’inhuman life that Scrooge is living. He leads him through his past life till Scrooge appeals in terror-stricken tones to give him one more ..chance to atone. The Spirit of God has entered the heart of the miserable miser, and the story concludes with Ebenezer Scrooge finding joy in doing kind actions. The music by Van Heck’s orchestra is a speciality.
