A CAREER OF CRIME.
SENTENCES TOTAL 41 YEARS. One of the most remarkable recorcb of crime which have been brought t' light in a police court was disclosed at Balmain, Sydney, on the Bth inst., when a man, 80 years of age, wa>: proceeded against for begging. He pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. His record of crime was handed u], by the police. It dated back to 1867. and the total of the sentences wouM make up the greater portion of an ordinary lifetime. The sentences railed from ■l4 days to five years. In Victoria, from 1867 to 1886, he received eight sentences for offences, which included assault and robbery, and larceny, the sentences totalling 21' years. In New. South Wales, from 1836 onwards, the man received sentences totalling 19 years 7 months 14 days. There >\;ere. also., eight- other convictions recorded against him, for stealing, damaging property, and other offences, and these were not included in-the total. The record shows that -lie has been sentenced in all to no less- a period than 41 years 1 month 14 tiyys, and most of that he has spent in gaol.
