HE COUNTY AND THE BOROUGH. Some letters relative to the license applied for by the Electrical Supply Co. to supply current in Stratford County were read at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council, but there >vas no discussion on them. S. M. Porritt wrote objecting to the incorrect statements made at last meeting “that the County petition was circulated by a director of the Electrical Supply Co. (the writer being named), and that the majority ot the signatories were not aware of the real purport of the petition.” His action in the matter was that after the petition had been circulated some three or four weeks, bo got a number of signatures, and, he defied the Council to bring forward a single County ratepayer to prove that he had been mislead in any way. The letter was “received,” the Mayor remarking that the question had already been fully thrashed out in the press.. Mr Blow, Under-secretary for Public Works, acknowledged receipt of letters of 11th and 25th re a definite assurance that no license affecting jthe Borough would be issued by the Government, and stated that the matter was receiving attention. The Hon. Mr Fraser (Public Works Minister) wrote stating his Department was in receipt of a petition signed by 235 ratepayers and 49 consumers in the Borough requesting that a license be granted to the ; Electrical Supply Company within the I County and the Borough. The path tion read as follows:—We, the underj.signed ratepayers and electric current consumers of the Borough of jStratford respectfully beg the Hon. : the Minister for Public Works to J grant the Electrical Supply Company ja license to operate within the Strati ford County including the Borough of j Stratford. In view of the terms of jthe draft license we consider the | granting thereof is equitable, and (while not inimical to the interests of jthe Borough will, nevertheless, he a ! great benefit to the residents in the i County.” The Minister desired to jhave the views of the Council thore(on.
It was decided, on the motion of . ilie Mayor, seconded by Cr. King, to ■ write to the Minister for Public Works, requesting him to forward to the Council a copy of the names |on the petition.
