TOKO NOTES.
[from our own correspondent.] The social which was held on Thursday last in connection with the sports proved a success. People veio present from all parts of the district, and judging by appearances seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. I ully sixty couples took the floor, which was in perfect order. The stage was taxed to accommodate the spectators. The dance music was supplied by W'. Walsh (violin), T. Walsh (piano), S. Parker (cornet), and extras were played by Miss Cumberworth, Miss Clark, Messrs Bredow and Kelly. During the evening songs were rendered by Mr Viokerman (Aramobo), and Mi Mackay. Mr Gillick gave a couple of recitations in capital style. Accompaniments were played by Mrs Wilks. Mr J. B. Hine, M.P., presented the trophies to the competitors, remarking that it gave him much pleasure to be present at such a successful gathering. It only came once a year, and the Sports Committee deserve a word of praise for the manlier in which everything was carried out. The supper was run by the Committee, and left nothing to lie desired. The Committee wish to place on record a hearty vote ,ot thanks to the ladies who so willingly assisted in the. supper room. Messrs Gernhoefer and Casky carried out the duties of M.p.’s in a creditable manner, and kept things moving until 2.30 o’clock, when the function was brought to a close.
Toko Cun Club (Affiliated). The Toko Gun Club held their first annual meeting In the Coronation Hall on Monday night. There was a fair attendance of members present, Mr W. H. Were presiding. The balance sheet was read and adopted, showing a credit balance of £3 3s, which was considered very satisfactory. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: President, W. H. Were; vice-presidents, Messrs E. Mine, J. Lucena, Alex Ferguson, A. Piper; committee, Messrs J. T. Kilpatrick, J. Ritchie, M. Gernhoefer, Alex Ferguson, C. Tuck; handicappers, Alex Ferguson and W. Morrison ; secretary and treasurer, J. Caskey; auditor, D. Bain. It was decided that the first shoot take place on April 23rd, and be a local one, handicapped on points. A recommendation was brought down that the Club hold an open shoot at an early date, and this was also carried. A hearty vote of thanks ivas passed to the late secretary, Mr W. Pratt, for the manner in which he carried out his duties.
General. The passengers on the Pohokurn train had a somewhat trying experience on Saturday night, when a steam valve on the engine hurst a short distance Prom Toko. At first it was thought that an engine frofn New Plymouth would have to he sent for, hut after two solid hours* work, the drivers of the engine managed to patch up the defective part, and the train proceeded on its journey two hours' late, after cheers from the passengers. Toko and Tariki Tennis Clnhs played a return match at Tariki recently, resultin gin a win for Tariki. Personal. in ss Ourr, the local postmistress, returned last week from a six weeks’ holiday. The friends of Mrs A. Bocock who met with a serious trap accident some time ago will ho pleased to learn that she is progressing satisfactorily. Mr and Mrs C. Riley left Toko last Friday for Auckland on a fortnight’s holiday. Mr D. Bain is at present laid up with a severe attack of influenza.
