A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.
# A CONFERENCE AT HAWERA. A conference of delegates from A. and P. Associations was held at Hawera yesterday for the purpose of discussing matters of mutual interest. The Wanganui, Waverley, Hawera, Egmont, Stratford and Taranaki Associations were represented, the Stratford delegates being Messrrs R. Dingle, W. P. Kirkwood, and W. H. H. Young. Mr B. C. Lysaght, president of the Egmont Association, was in the chair. It was moved on behalf of the Stratford Association that Associations be bound by the decisions of the conference^ —that all recommendations made should bo carried out.—This was not carried, failing even to find a seconder, but the discussion showed that a number of the Associations were not aware of the real character of the conference. A motion was carried recommending that the gate charge at all shows be two shillings. It was decided to urge on the Government the necessity of taking strenuous steps in respect of noxious weeds, especially ragwort and blackberry, and also of experiments being conducted with a view to removing the common fern on hilly country.
Mr C. Hawken, late president of the Hawera Association, moved that the Government be urged to endeavour to supply the country with more labor. He said that the country was not producing as much as it should because there was not sufficient labour. — The motion was carried. It was moved that the Government be asked to exhibit their imported stock at A. and P. Shows, but as finally passed the motion was a request for both tho exhibition and entrance of the stock.
The question of the use of the kinematograph as a means of inclining "the young idea" favorably towards farming pursuits was fully discussed in all its aspects and the meeting approved the principle.
It was decided to make a recommendation to the Dominion Conference of A. and P. Associations that a central body be given power to enforco penalties inflicted by individual Associations.
It was decided that it be a recommendation to the Wanganui Association to alter its dates in the direction of holding its show one week after the Palmerston North show, instead of a fortnight after, as at present, the other shows along the coast to follow in serial order. The question of appointing more judges was also discussed, the general view of delegates being that there were not sufficient-at present for the requirements of the Associations throughout the Dominion. It was suggested that more young men should be encouraged to fit themselves for the position of a judge.
