SYDNEY HARBOR RATES.
A veritable storm of protest was raised in the Assembly against the new wharfage harbor rates which the Government proposes to levy in Sydney, the objection being that the imposts would adversely affect producers in the State and drive trade away. The Bill provides for a tax of sixpence per ton on wheat, sixpence on a bale of wool, and tenpence per ton on general merchandise, thereby raising £34,000. It further proposed an impost of harbor dues at the rate of tenpence per ton on ships loading, but this will not be charged if the vessel is loaded at the wharf, the wharfage charge being sixteen pence per ton. It is not proposed to extend the dues to Newcastle. The measure has been introduces and read a first time.
